1. When did you start volunteering at the shelter?
I started volunteering in September 2020. I try to come every Monday for 3-4 hours.
2. What’s your favorite part of volunteering?
My favorite part of volunteering is just being around animals and getting to know their individual personalities. Usually there is always a happy ending and it’s really a joyous thing to witness their departure.
3. If you could give one piece of advice about volunteering, what would it be?
Many people say they are unable to volunteer at a shelter because it’s so depressing. I’d love for people to realize that MCHS is anything but… where else can you go in life and everyone’s thrilled to see you! (Well except Mei) The simple act of being present brings happiness to their lives, it really doesn’t take much on our behalf. Whatever amount of time you have to offer makes the world of difference in their lives.
4. Why are you so passionate about the work we do?
I Believe MCHS is one of the most important organizations on the Mendocino Coast and the amount of work they do is pretty incredible. There will never be enough funding to take care of every animal that needs help… but I believe they do their best with what they have. Community awareness and support is integral to the long term success of MCHS.
5. Any special stories you'd like to share?
Some of the happiest moments in my life (besides watching my children grow) are running into former shelter dogs with their new humans. They will always recognize old friends and it’s really wonderful to have that Inter-species connection.
