Mendocino Coast Humane Society

Saving animals’ lives since 1987

Our mission: To contribute to a better life for animals and to inspire public awareness of animals' needs.

Due to county and statewide orders regarding the Coronavirus pandemic, MCHS is closed to the general public with the exception of limited essential services by appointment only. This includes returning stray animals to their owner, adoptions, and spay/neuter clinic services. If you’d like to inquire about making an appointment, please call 707-964-7729. We kindly ask for your patience as we are trying to return calls as quickly as possible while our office is not staffed regularly throughout the day.
Because we are only able to provide limited services at this time, our shelter’s income is very limited as well. Compounding this difficulty is the temporary closure of the Ark Thrift Shop, which is our primary revenue source. At this time, most of our paid staff has been laid off. The five remaining staff members are rotating to cover all animal care duties 7 days a week, while striving to maintain a safe distance from each other at all times.
Our greatest need at this time is monetary donations to support our essential services and the animals in our care. If you can, please consider making a donation via check or Paypal. We know times are difficult for everyone right now, and we greatly appreciate your support.

Ways we achieve our Mission

Adoption Center

We provide a secure, comfortable environment and medical care for the hundreds of animals that come through our doors each year. The dogs are housed in indoor/outdoor kennels with heated floors and are provided with beds and blankets. The cats reside in condos with shelves, scratching posts, and hide-outs. Young motherless puppies and kittens are provided for through our foster program, where they receive the special care they need while in the home of a kind-hearted and dedicated volunteer. Separate isolation areas are available for animals undergoing medical treatment. (Click here for more about our Adoption Center.)

Through our Adoptions Program, we offer a variety of wonderful animals who are deserving of a loving, responsible home. Our adoption fees include spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations, microchip, de-worming, flea treatment, as well as heartworm, feline leukemia and FIV testing. In addition to being open Monday through Saturday, we also extend our adoption program's reach with our Mobile Pet Adoptions van, which enables us to go into our community with adoptable animals in Mendocino as well as Fort Bragg. You can also find adoptable pets listed on our web site, and we feature an adoptable animal weekly on radio and in local newspapers.

We spay and neuter all adoptable animals at our on-site clinic prior to adoption. We also offer spay/neuter services for public pets at reduced cost. We know this will benefit the community by decreasing future litters and unwanted animals.

Medical Care

We strive to ensure every animal is healthy before adoption. Full medical care is provided to those in need, and each animal receives age appropriate vaccinations. We test for disease and provide necessary treatment. We also provide emergency care for injured animals.

Training & Education

We have been developing humane education and training programs to help people keep their pets, making it less likely that they will end up in the shelter. For information on a number of animal behavior topics, visit our Friends and Links page.

Mendocino Coast Humane Society was created by Coastal residents who wanted a 'no-kill' alternative to the County's Animal Control. To increase adoptions, the Mobile Pet Adoption truck was purchased in 1998 and can be seen every weekend on the headlands in Mendocino Village, weather permitting. The new Adoption Center was completed in July 2001 with the help of many donors and the tireless efforts of staff and volunteers. The Adoption Center provides a warm, comfortable and secure home for our animals. Improvements to the Adoption Center property have continued, including an in-house surgery, large outside kennels, additional kennel facilities for isolation and kittens/puppies, noise abatement panels in the dog kennel area, a grassy, fenced exercise lawn for daytime exercise, and the Kitty Cottage.
