Sit Sit is the first command every dog is taught.
Slip the fingers of your left hand under the dog's collar. This will prevent the dog from jumping up, lying down or moving away. Hold a treat at the end of the dog's nose. Move the treat up just a little and back toward the dog's head. As the dog watches the treat, his rear will go down. As your dog sits, give the command, Sit and give a little treat.
Do not command your dog to Sit until you see the action taking place.
Dogs learn through practice. Repeat 5 to 6 times for several times a day and you will be surprised how quickly your dog catches on.
Encourage your dog with a happy voice and reward with praise, petting, play or a treat.
Down Down is an important command for every puppy to learn.
- Attach a leash to your dog's collar.
- Place your dog on your left side in a sit.
- Place a small treat in your left hand.
- Place your left hand in front of your pup and slowly move your hand out and down and give the command. Down.
Your dog should naturally try to follow the treat and should walk his front paws out until his body is lying on the ground.
- Say, "good boy” or “good girl” and give your dog the treat.
Practice this command several times a day.
After your dog understands the command Down; practice the command from a Sit and a Stand. Remember the command is Down, not “lay down”.
