Come
This is probably the most important command your dog can learn. If your dog should ever break his leash or starts to run away, you should be able to call him back to you with this command. Young puppies quickly learn the command Come through play.
1. Have someone lightly restrain your dog while you excite him with a treat or toy that he really likes.
2. Start very close to the dog.
3. When the dog really wants to get to the treat or toy, the person holding your dog should let go. As the dog moves towards you, move back just a step or two. Continue to be excited and give the command Come.
4. Repeat several times so your dog will be eager to play this game.
5. When your dog understands the game and runs eagerly to you, add a little hide and seek. Let your dog see you, then hide behind a chair or in a doorway. Use a squeaky toy to add to the excitement. When your dog is running towards you, say Come. Keep the distance short, make it easy for your dog and always reward with praise, petting, play and/or a treat.
6. Running away from your dog for a few steps often motivates the puppy to chase and catch up with you. As your dog runs towards you, pause, say Come and greet your dog with excitement.
All dogs can also learn the command Come. Another way to teach the command Come is as follows:
- With your dog walking at your side, take a sudden step backwards.
- Say your dog's name and the command Come. Your dog should naturally turn at the sound of your voice.
- When your dog is facing you, keep walking backwards holding on to the leash. Praise your dog for moving towards you. Be enthusiastic and show them a treat.
- Older dogs enjoy the games too.
Hint: Try not to call your dog with the command Come, until you have taught him the command. Your dog may learn not to respond if he hears the command Come over and over again.
Never use the command Come and then do something unpleasant to your dog, like cutting its nails. This is the fastest way to make your dog reluctant to respond to the command.
